In My Mailbox #39

In My Mailbox is hosted by The Story Siren … and I end up adding a ton of books to my wish list every week.

All my IMM posts can be found here!

I was going to do a sort of joke IMM this week because of what I received in the mail on Monday. Then I actually got a book in the mail so it’s a more official IMM post than it was going to be.

First, the book:

The Aristobrats
by Jennifer Solow

It’s all about the Attitude

Parker Bell knows the secret to beauty is pretty simple–wearing the right clothes isn’t as important as how you feel in them. Popularity is like that too. It’s all about attitude. You have to picture who you want to be and then just imagine that’s who you already are.

This year Parker and her three best friends have made their way to the top of the populadder at Wallingford Academy. And they’re ready to use their Aristobrat status to help spread positive vibes throughout the school. But when the girls are assigned to produce the seriously lame school webcast, their popularity plummets! Will this tragedy destroy the girls’ status? Or their friendship? Or both? (goodreads.com)

Now, this isn’t something I would normally read, but I was contacted by the author about it and hit it off so well with her she arranged for her publisher to find me a copy. I will admit that I am honestly curious about the book. If it’s written with as much humour as Jennifer writes in her messages I think I will enjoy it. Thanks to the author and Sourcebooks for t his book! (Also? It’s so shiny! Very pretty to look at. ;))

What I got on Monday made me do a little happy jiggle. I was expecting it but I didn’t think it would be so big or so  well put together.

“What the heck is that?” I know you are probably asking yourself. “A fish?!” And yes, it’s a fish. Specifically it is Felix the fish, the mascot of BigFish Games. He’s my one year anniversary gift for being a member to the game club. I’ve been a member on and off for about 5 years but never for a full year. This past May was my 1 year (consecutive) anniversary and I got this lovely guy this week!

He is now being enjoyed by Jinx.

Jinx was sooooooo excited when I opened the box because OMG!!!11!!!!!!11!!11 it’s a TOY! I tossed around the ideas of keeping him or letting Jinx have a nibble and my love for Jinx and his desperate enthusiasm for wanting the new toy won. So today, after taking my fish photos, I let Jinx carry him around the house all proudly.

happiness is…

After a really, really, long day and night at work on a Saturday and getting home at 1:00am – seeing how insanely excited the dogs are as they frolic in the 2cm of snow that fell while we were out.

And then this morning how urgently they wanted to go outside because they could see it was still on the ground.

The first snowfall always rejuvenates my old granny Annabelly and her tail wags (a very rare thing) as she bounds through the back yard. (And then lies down for 2 days after all that exertion.)

Bitter Night

Bitter Night (Horngate Witches, #1)
by Diana Pharaoh Francis

Once, Max dreamed of a career, a home, a loving family. Now all she wants is freedom…and revenge. A witch named Giselle transformed Max into a warrior with extraordinary strength, speed, and endurance. Bound by spellcraft, Max has no choice but to fight as Giselle’s personal magic weapon — a Shadowblade — and she’s lethally good at it. But her skills are about to be put to the test as they never have before….

The ancient Guardians of the earth are preparing to unleash widespread destruction on the mortal world, and they want the witches to help them. If the witches refuse, their covens will be destroyed, including Horngate, the place Max has grudgingly come to think of as home. Max thinks she can find a way to help Horngate stand against the Guardians, but doing so will mean forging dangerous alliances — including one with a rival witch’s Shadowblade, who is as drawn to Max as she is to him — and standing with the witch she despises. Max will have to choose between the old life she still dreams of and the warrior she has become, and take her place on the side of right — if she survives long enough to figure out which side that is…. Well, this my pathetic number 4 book for this month. I can’t believe I only read 4 books! Of course The Distant Hours was 679 pages, so that could be like 3 books if you break it down…right?

Anyhoo… I started this book ages ago – November 2009 to be exact. (wow! I thought it was over the summer.) I just could not get into it at all back then and I was a little turned off by the rampaging hormones in the first chapter. Since I’m having yet another autumn reading rut, I thought I would give it one more go.

I’m on the fence about the book. I didn’t particularly like the characters, although Alexandre did grow on me in the end and I liked the addition of Thor. My problem is I don’t like Max. It’s hard to read a book when you don’t want to be around the main character. I think the story itself has a lot of potential. It’s a unique take on witchcraft and paranormal but it might just be a little too unique for my taste. I don’t know. I read the book without stopping (with the exception of work, sleep and eating) but I wasn’t really enthused about it.

I see there’s a sequel due out this December and I think I will be picking it up. Now that this first book has paved the way with back story and character intros I am hoping the second book will be more focused on action and suspense.

I don’t think I have seen many (any?) book blogs post about this series, so if you’ve read this book and posted about it, please let me know!

I actually picked up the book because I loved the author’s first series (Path series) and this new one was about witches – my above all favourite paranormal character. So I will give it another book to see how I truly feel about the series. Hopefully Max will be less blah for me the second time around.

destruction chronicles: are you bleeping kidding me?!?!

On the morning after having someone over and going to bed late, and having walked all over tarnation running errands at work and after having a miserable freaking week and on the morning of the Gala concert event that will have me out of the house most of the afternoon and home probably close to midnight.

Yesterday morning when we were leaving for work I saw a tractor parked a little up the road with its lights on and behind a shrub. I said “Don’t think I don’t see you there, tractor. Get off my street!” Rather than get off my street in aided other construction vehicles in the destruction of the driveway two doors down.

I don’t know what the hell they are doing. Likely a problem with the new water pipes they put down. It’s not a problem, we, as the users of said water, have noticed at all. Maybe it’s specific to the house attached to that part of the driveway. All I know is that if they come anywhere NEAR my driveway I am going to kick them all in the shins and steal their tractor.

I am now extra exhausted and very ticked off. Being woken up a half hour before your alarm clock on weekdays sucks, but it’s nothing as sucktacular as being woken up at 7am in the morning on a weekend when you can’t even take a nap in the afternoon.

*shakes fist at the city*

something something blog post

What a month. I don’t feel like it’s ever going to be over either.

Huge gala event at work on Saturday and that’s been causing much of the strain on the month, but there’s other stuff added in there as well. Including a ridiculous ticket we got this week for a no left turn that just appeared out of nowhere on a street we can always turn left on. Turns out they put the temporary sign up that morning but it was HIDING behind the construction sign so you couldn’t see it when you drove by. They of course have a cop trap there just pulling car after car over because the sign isn’t visible. So unfair. Ticket will likely be contested. The rest of the week the no left turn sign has been placed right in the middle of the intersection so the people being pulled over now are just idiots.

Today I noted my old boss’ last day at work in his agenda and might have burst into tears. That was a great moment. I am so pathetic. My new rule is “The first rule of Dude is Leaving is that we don’t talk about Dude is Leaving”. I have had to coordinate scheduling with his new me at the new office for the next couple of months and for some of next semester. I already miss him and he’s still around. Gah!

My entire back has been killing me this week. It gets to the point that I can’t sleep. Even my stretches aren’t helping much right now. Driving me crazy. It’s painful from my shoulders all the way down to my bottom. Anything that can possibly be categorized as “back” is throbbing. I would like it to stop.

I will not be dressing up for Halloween at work this year. Others in the office have grumbled about that because they say now they can’t. I don’t know why this is a problem. I have dressed up without anyone else ever doing it every year because I wanted to. Grown ups can make their own decisions. This will be the first year that I will not be in costume at work (while at a job that allows such a thing), I haven’t even decorated this year. I thought maybe I’d get into the mood by the end of the month, but really, it’s the farthest thing from my mind. If others want to dress up go for it. You don’t need me to do it to do it yourself. I just have no festive spirit this year. ;(

One of my ultimate best friends ever will be joining my floor at work in November. I am thrilled. She’s changing positions so she’ll be moving to my building and floor and will be close to my desk. I can’t wait to have her all up in my area again (ha!). She also just got engaged so she no longer feels she can call this month Sucktober like the rest of us are. Another friend and I made these Bride’s Maid application forms and got a ton of people to fill them out and we gave them to her at lunch today. There was so much laughter. I like laughter. Still doesn’t mean this month isn’t sucking though. =P

October is normally my favourite time of year. For the first time ever I think I’m looking forward to November starting so this month will be over.
