Ink Exchange

Ink Exchange by Melissa MarrInk Exchange
by Melissa Marr

I was wowed by Melissa Marr’s first novel, Wicked Lovely and had been eagerly awaiting the release of her second book, Ink Exchange. Marr had created a world where mortals and fey co-existed, though not particularly in harmony. I was sadly disappointed in her second book, though set in the same town and same world, the characters in Ink Exchange were nowhere near as likable as in the first book.

This is not a sequel to Wicked Lovely, this is a stand alone story which takes side characters from the first book and elevates them to main characters and quite frankly I hated Leslie and her obsession with getting a tattoo (though it is an obsession I can relate to 100%!) and Irial, the Faerie who stalks her.

Whereas in Wicked Lovely I was drawn to the characters and the story, I found Leslie way too whiny and at times bratty. I understand she was supposed to be troubled and fighting back at the world, but darn it I just wanted to smack her and tell her to grow up and get over it!

I liked the Fey in the first book and I did not like them in this one. Perhaps it was just the difference in personality between the Summer and Winter Courts, but I think it was more that this book tried too hard and didn’t have the same flow and feel as the first. It’s not that I liked the other characters more and would have preferred to read about them, it was more that this story wasn’t as flushed out as the first one.

I feel guilty for not liking Ink Exchange because I am afraid it might be an insult to the author, who I know writes a great story. It’s just that this one didn’t do anything for me. Even with the tattooing! And I am all about tattooing! ๐Ÿ™‚

Cover art on both books is stunning and if there is ever another novel set in this world I will surely buy it because I can’t help myself. I am addicted to Faeries as much as I am addicted to tattoos. ๐Ÿ˜‰
