Today I am 42.

This is the answer to the meaning of life, right? I should understand, and know, everything now?

No, seriously.

*waits some more*

Is this, like, something that takes a little bit to boot up? I can wait. By tomorrow it’ll be installed right? This meaning of life knowledge that comes with 42?

Kurt Vonnegut wouldn’t have just made this sort of thing up, would he? I mean, I don’t know him or anything, but he reads like a really honest guy.

So today wasn’t 40-below zero. In fact we had ourselves a lovely ice storm. Thankfully I had asked Shawn to take today off from work to spend with me. The downside was that we were outside within minutes of waking up, hacking about 2 inches of ice off the car, and steps, and backyard so the dogs could get out. We also missed the movie we were going to see, that I had even bought tickets for on my movie app, because freezing rain just didn’t stop. Plus side there, it was cheapy tuesday so we only lost $12 off of a gift card.

Because it’s my birthday, and I saw a few people post this on FB this month, I’m going to answer some questions!

1. Favorite smell – Lavender. Or patchouli.
2. Last time I cried – last Wednesday, after being sick at work (ugh)

4. Favorite Flowers – Daisy, and since I discovered them two summers ago, Sunrise Lantana
5. Favorite dog breed – Finnish Lapphund (obviously), French Bulldogs, mixed breeds!
6. Untie laces- WHY?
7. Roller coaster- That’ll be a hard no, Greg.
8. Favorite ice cream – I do not like ice cream. (Though if I want some, it’s got to be vanilla)
9. Shorts or Jeans – Jeans
10. What are you listening to- P!nk, and The Cranberries on repeat
11. Color of truck – I do not have a truck. I have a car. It’s red.
12. Color of eyes- Green-Hazel
13. Favorite food – I really like bread.
14. Favorite Holiday – Halloween
15. Night owl or day person – Um… mid-morning through lunch time. Rest of the time I just want to sleep.
16. Favorite day of the week- Saturday
17. Do you have a nick name – Pookie, kit-cat,  Cattypants,
18. Favorite music – indie pop

20. Piercings – 3 (was 4, I took out the eyebrow piercing in September.)
21. Number of pets- 2 dogs, one feline overlord
22. Real book or kindle – real book. I really do not like eReaders.
23. Shower or bath – shower
24. # of pillows on your bed – 4. One is for the dog (Yoshi).
25. What food do you hate – brussels sprouts, asparagus, onion, liver…I could go on.

temperature fascination

As long as I can remember, I have always associated the weather on my birthday with -20-something degrees celcius. I remember frigid walks from home to the bowling alley (or back from) in my teens. We always say stuff like, “Oh, it’s just Cat’s birthday with 40-below temperatures!”

Every time I see a forecast with an above-zero temperature for the 23rd of January, think how odd that is. How abnormal that is. It’s not Birthday Weather with cold so biting that the hairs inside your nose freeze together when you try to breathe!

And yet… I looked up historical weather information for my birthday and see that my frozen birthday memories are… false?

They are predicting a high of 6°C , no precipitation, this year. I feel very weird when the temperature is above zero on my birthday. I always thought the warmest birthday I ever experienced was in 2009 when I went to Disney World. But I was wrong, I suppose. I do believe that was the only time I was able to be coatless & bootless on my birthday though. My birthday is a week away however, so the actual temperatures and weather are subject to change one billionty times between now and then. You can be certain that I will note it down on that day of course.

And because I love to nerd-out over the weather (temperature) records for my birthday, here’s my list!

YearHi Low
1976-26 °C-31 °C
1977-12 °C-16
1978-4 °C-7
1979-6 °C-12
1980-1 °C-13
1981-4 °C-11
1982-2 °C-22
1983-2 °C-5

As you can see, there are few -20+°C days on here. Perhaps I have memories of the temps WITH windchill added in? All the historical info only gives you the actual highs and lows, not the extra “feels-like” information. Looks like the actual date I was born still holds the record for coldest January 23rd ever here in my neck of the woods.

I’m silly insomuch as I like to know the records highs & lows for dates. I like to know what time it is all the time, and I like to know what the temperature is. I don’t really care about the weather itself – unless I am tracking how much snow we’ve had in a winter

This is likely a very dull post for most of you. I think my mum will find it interesting though. I may have gotten my weather-obsession from her. (Including the “what is the water temperature today?” part from our summers on Lake Champlain!)

Yes, these are things I think about on a regular basis. Which also means I spend, like, an hour looking up historical data on temperatures from my birthdate while sitting on the couch in my pjs. There are likely 1000 more productive things I could be doing with my time, but this is what amused me for the past hour. If you have known me long, and still like being my friend, I thank you for putting up with my quirks and weirdness. You are wonderful people in my life. heh

On January 23 I turned 37.

I’m normally very vocal about my birthdays but this year I felt quite about things. Not due to my age, not one bit. I just feel quieter this year. This hasn’t stopped me from having many birthday festivities, though. I mean, I still get Birthday Week and this year it has sort of stretched into a Birthday Month and a Half. 😉 When my parents stayed with us in early January, my mum made me my favourite birthday meal. Then I had a friend in from out of town and along with some other friends, we had a birthday dinner (that I cooked) on January 19 – which is actually my sister’s birthday. (And sister mine, if you are reading this, I still need to get over there and give you the hand-made card and your gifts! Oops.) Shawn got me my presents early and I have been playing with one since. I just had another birthday dinner this weekend at my in-laws’ place and in February I’ll be celebrating once more with other friends as one of our group will be back in town for the weekend. I was taken to lunch by my two bosses on my actual birthday and then we had a group lunch for myself and another coworker on Friday.

Birthdays come with a lot of food and cake. 😉

So, here are some photos of the last couple of weeks, just so I have a place holder on my blog when I look back years from now to see how I rocked my entry into my 37th year.

A treasure hunt was set out for me upon my return from work on January 17. The surprise as the end was my very own Cards Against Humanity  game. Shawn had this printed up and then he and a coworker cut up the cards one afternoon. I had this in time for my dinner party on the weekend. I will not tell you how long it took me to figure out the riddles to the next clues… ugh. I felt so stupid! haha

The BIG gift (which my in-laws’ chipped in on) was this here fancy pants DSLR camera! I have been looking at the Canon Rebel for a few years now and could never justify the price but I have wanted a decent entry level camera for some time. A well-timed sale and my research into what I wanted to use, yielded the Canon Rebel EOS T31. I still have a ton to learn about how to use this, but I have been having fun experimenting with it so far.

On the morning of January 19 I went out to a fancy Japanese paper store with my friend Dylann, who is to blame for my current card-making obsession. I’m all about fancy paper, stickers and hand-made cards now. My husband is thrilled. It was super snowy that day and the roads were horrible, so of course I was having people over for dinner and we needed to use the car a lot. I know how to pick the days.

Dylann and I needed food before we set to crafting and we ended up at this place without even a sign on the door. I posted this photo on Facebook and a friend named it for me. The Sparrow. I think, anyhow. I even checked in ON facebook in hopes that the GPS thing would pull up the name of the place. Anyhow, the food was so good I am STILL thinking about it over a week later. It had gluten free options, too. People keep telling me it’s a place for hipsters, but by golly, if that’s the kind of food hipsters eat? Just call me a hipster.

I made the Betty Crocker gluten-free birthday cake and it was so good. In fact, I think I might like it better than regular birthday cake. And this, my friends, is a BIG DEAL when it comes to me and vanilla birthday cake. I fought with the icing, but it turned out ok in the end. As I was cursing and swearing at the icing as I made it, Dylann patiently ironed all the scraps of paper I bought at the paper store. Dylann is a treasure I am so glad I found. 😉

Jinx is a delight to experiment with my camera on. Sophie doesn’t stay still enough to get a photo, but Jinx will hold poses forever. I was thrilled with the detail that comes out when I use my new Canon camera on the dogs. Absolutely thrilled. (Click photo to enlarge a little bit. I don’t have the full-sized photos up though.)

RRRRrrrrrroooOOOOOoooooOOOO!! Stop taking my photo!

Sophie is the complete opposite of a delight to photograph. I’m surprised as anything when I manage to capture a clear shot of her that isn’t her bum or a tail zooming off camera. I caught her this Saturday RRRrrroooooooOOOooing at Shawn as he pretended to chase her around the yard. Yesterday’s -18C temperature felt almost spring-like after coming off a week of -34C. We spent quite a bit of time outside in the back yard.

One of the things I am most excited for with my new camera is the possibilities I have for capturing sunsets. I know you all know I have an obsession with sunsets, so you’ll not be surprised when I realized how wonderfully this camera captured them.

Click me for a bigger sunset experience!

This sunset on January 24 was EXACTLY how I saw it with my own eyes. I cannot wait for more glorious sunsets to come this year. I might even get some of these printed up and made into art for my walls. Man, I love sunsets.

My mother-in-law also made me the Betty Crocker gf cake (yum!) and I was just enamoured by these candles. They were just so cute! Little cupcake things… of course I had to play with my camera before blowing them out. I am impressed with the low-light results with this camera. I love my camera.

Oh, I also started Operation New Age New Hair… on my birthday I cut it after my shower. I was going to wait for the weekend but it was driving me crazy. I don’t know how you people with long hair do it. Mine was just reaching the top of my shoulders and I couldn’t do anything without inhaling it or eating it. Ugh. So Wednesday night I cut all the pink ends off. My plan was to bleach it and then dye it bright read (like real red, as in a primary colour red) and black, but the store is out of red dye. Until they have it in stock I didn’t know what to do… but then… the bleach turned the purple in my hair a bright pink. I slept on it for a day and then decided I will keep it like this until my dye is back in stock.

I feel like bubblegum and JEM! I finally have Jem hair, after decades of dreaming I could be a cartoon character! If any of you recall the doll from the 80s she had these yellow-blonds roots and then the pink… and that’s how my hair has gone just from bleaching it. I LOVE IT!  (This was right before we got in the car on the way to my in-laws’.)

Can I just take a moment to be all excited about the fact that I am starting to have muscle definition in my arms from doing push-ups every day? I might not have lost all the weight I wanted to by now, but by golly, I have nicer arms than I ever had. Yay for muscle! Now if only it didn’t weigh more than fat… hmm.

And to conclude this very long post.. a photo of all three dogs from Saturday night…

Aren’t they precious? It’s very interesting when someone goes near the front door at my in-laws’ place. One of the only times Sophie wil stand still AND because she was focused on the door, she didn’t notice I was taking a photo. HA!

And a PS –

Without fail, when my father-in-law gets a new hat, I will notice it (but not realize it’s a new acquisition at the time) and I will steal it and put it on my head (I put a lot of things on my head. It’s a thing.) I happen to think I look rather adorable in this one, if I do say so myself. It goes very well with my new pink hair. Happy birthday to ME! (Ok, I left the hat there and didn’t take it home, but I think I need one just like it. Yes?)

The end.

birthday week begins!

Hello, lovely blog readers! I have been absent this month and for the first time in a year it is only because of my lack of time than a lack of wanting to blog! I had grand bloggy plans for this week/weekend but they have been put on the side burner as I work crazy busy at, well, work and then have all this other stuff to do when I get home. (Eating healthier takes up a lot more time what with all the prep, cooking and eating). I also have not read nearly as much as I wanted to!

As you all probably know (because I like to tell everyone, multiple times), Monday is my birthday! I’m 36 this year and though the thought of having to check off a different age range group on surveys sort of freaks me out (why am I clumped with those in their 40s now!?) I’m still sticking to my statement that my 30s have been the best decade ever (despite all the crap that’s been going on lately).

Last night I had some dear, dear friends over for a Birthday Board-Game Bonanza! (This has replaced the past Birthday BOWLING Bonanzas I used to have. Health issues have made bowling difficult and money issues have made it too expensive!)

Do you  have any idea how hard it was for me to find party hats? I looked at the Dollar Store (used to get them there), Zellers and finally ended up at Party Experts where I paid stupid amounts of money for hats. You’d better believe I made my guests wear them. =P

My besties and their Optional Men (in the facebook invite I said men were optional in case they are like my man and do not like to party… all of them came!) all brought some food and drinks and we chomped on tortellini, cheese, bread and cupcakes before we hit the crazy board game fun!

(not pictured, the tortellini)

Sadly my friend Maureen and her husband Peter had to leave after the food because one of their daughters was really sick (103F fever and rising! I hope Becca is ok!) but we made sure they each got a cupcake before they left AND I super appreciated them driving all the way to my place (bringing all the others) just for this. It meant a lot to me!

We played Cranium and Apples to Apples the rest of the night. Cranium pitted couple against couple against couple. Shawn and I failed epically at this game. We hadn’t even made it much past the first brain when Elise & Jason made it to the middle and Steph & James weren’t too far behind them. There was so much laughter involved in that game that I honestly didn’t even care how bad we did. I only bring this game out once a year it seems. I need to have a board game night in the summer, too!

We played two rounds of Apples to Apples – if you don’t know what this is, it’s a word association game. You play a green card, say it says “delightful”. The rest of us all chose from cards in our hands a person, place, thing that you might associate with delightful. “Car”, “Marilyn Monroe”, “Science Fair Projects”, etc. Whomever’s card is chosen as the match gets the delightful card. The game ends when someone has collected a specified number of green cards. We played one round properly and another one where we had to chose a the complete opposite of the green card.

Anyhow, this game is simple and can be a ton of fun because you never know how odd the matches can be!

I love my friends and their Optional Men. We laugh so much when we’re together. It’s nice to have a group of friends that you feel comfortable around all the time. It wasn’t the same without Maureen & Peter, but hopefully if we do this again in the summer (on the deck, with BBQ’d goodies!) they’ll be able to stay longer!

Who doesn’t love party favours? (Answer: Jinx & Sophie)

Oh, Jinx also doesn’t like Elise much anymore, since she decided to try and have a photoshoot with him and a party hat. It didn’t go so well.

You keep saying TREAT. Well? WHERE IS IT?

Birthday Week continues tonight with dinner at my parents’ place. I am already drooling thinking of the roast beef I’ll be having. AND the Mommy Cake – which is the best cake ever! Oh, side note – Steph made the cupcakes from last night and unknowingly made them my favourite kind – cherry chip! So I had a cupcake with breakfast this morning and will be having the SAME cake tonight made by my Mum! It’s a proven fact that cake and other birthday foods do not have any calories, fat or sugar in them when it’s your birthday (week). True story. Really.

You can see more photos here!

Happy birthday to me!
