5 Questions: author J. Scott Savage (Far World Series) AND A CONTEST!!

I'm very excited to be participating in my very first Virtual Book Tour! The ever so charming and witty author, J. Scott Savage sent me a little note asking if I would like to participate in this event for the release of his first Young Adult novel, Far World Book 1: Water Keep. The book is being released from the same publishing house as the Fablehaven books which I loved ever so much. Luckily I loved this book too, or I'd be slightly concerned about how to post a semi-positive, "This Book Sucked!" review. I needn't worry about that as my review is nothing but positive! As a perk of the virtual tour, I not only received an ARC, but the chance to interview the author, who never ceases to amuse me with his sharp wit and funny answers. You should check out his blog if you feel like looking into the life of an author. He's funny and gives great advice on how to be a good author, etc.

AT THE END OF THE INTERVIEW, CHECK OUT HOW TO WIN YOUR VERY OWN COPY OF FAR WORLD BOOK 1 : WATER KEEP!!

My first book giveaway contest! Woohoo! And without further ado, here are my 5 Questions with J. Scott Savage!

1. When I first found out that the main character, Marcus, was going to be wheelchair bound, I have to admit I was a little worried. Though Marcus does not come off as a victim at all and in fact is a strong character who has the courage to stand up to the bullies and fight back. Was it important to you to show that Marcus was not a victim just because of his disability?Definitely. When my youngest brother was in about fourth grade, he had a friend who was born with no legs. I never saw the boy in a wheelchair, but he rode a skateboard everywhere he went, lying on his stomach. The kid was a blur. I often thought of his attitude when I wrote Marcus. I’ve said in this in other interviews as well, but I am always a little disappointed in stories where the main character starts out as a reject but ends up being the best at everything. I like characters with flaws—weaknesses that can turn into strengths. Marcus and Kyja both felt to me like characters who have setbacks, but who are willing to pull each other through.2. When writing a story which will obviously consist of a few books, do you have each book plotted out at the start, or does it come to you in pieces which you then scatter throughout the series?A little of both. I know enough about the series, the world, and future events that I can set them up from book one, but I also like to discover things along the way. I think I’d liken to having mile markers in my head, if that makes sense.3. Why are chickens so innately funny?I know! Chickens and penguins. How can you not looking at them and just laugh your head off. Clear proof that whoever created them has a sense of humor.4. How important is the element of surprise in a book?I think it depends on how you define surprise. Some authors spend so much time creating a “twist” ending, that the story starts to feel like a gimmick. But at the same time, you want a story that takes you in unexpected directions. Nothing makes me happier than when a book or movie takes a turn that I totally didn’t foresee. Not so much a trick as just a surprise. When it works well, it is a delight. I’m hoping that Water Keep wasn’t too predictable. I have some really fun things in store for book two, and I honestly think readers will be blown away by the ending of book 4 and consequently what takes place in book 5.5. Cake or pie? Explain.Definitely pie. I think because, while cake is good, there are only so many variations. Pie on the other hand can go from key lime, to French silk, to chicken pot. (Hey chickens again!) Plus pie can be served cold, hot, with melting ice-cream on top. Going back to your last question, pie is very unpredictable. And that folks, is a little glimpse into the mind of a YA Fantasy author! I especially like his opinion on pie.CONTEST RULES**!To enter the contest to win your own copy of Far World Book 1, please leave a comment on this post, and/or the review post. (A comment in both places will snag you two entries!) I will announce the winner next Friday, Saturday August 16**!** Two things 1) Friday is apparently the 15th and not 16th. So I will ANNOUNCE the winners on the 16th. Oops. I need to learn how to read a calendar better. 2) I believe this contest is only open to Canada and the US. I will have to double check on that. So if you are outside North America and you have entered I will have to get back to you. Sorry. :(Good luck!
