Big Jack

Big Jack (an Eve Dallas novel)by J.D. Robb

In New York City in 2059, someone is pursuing missing gems from a decades-old heist...someone who's willing to kill for them. Sharp-witted and sexy, NYPSD Lieutenant Eve Dallas is used to travelling in the shadowy corners outside the law. And in a future where crime meets cutting-edge technology, she will attempt to track down the diamonds once and for all -- and stop the danger and death that have surrounded them for years. Somewhere in my basement is a hard cover version of Remember When by Nora Roberts and J.D. Robb that I got for $2 years ago. Big Jack is the J.D. Robb portion of that anthology (is it really an anthology when they are both written by the same author??) I believe the Nora Roberts story is Hot Rocks, which is the book written by one of the characters in Big Jack. I have never read this hard cover book in my basement. But when I saw the book above in mass market edition in the store last month I was all "Hell, yeah! A new J.D. Robb!" and then realized what it was and was happy that I didn't have to hold a hard cover book to read the story. All this to say it came out a looooong time ago. (And when did 2003 suddenly become a long time ago? I am still having trouble with the 90s not being the *last* decade!) Per goodreads.com this here book is considered number 17.5 in the In Death Series. The story takes place right after Peabody makes Detective (which if you haven't read the first 16 books then I suppose I just spoiled it for you, but since it was in 2002-2003 I figure I have enough of a buffer for the die-hard fans).I adore Dallas and Peabody. In fact I might just be the Peabody to my boss's Dallas. I want to play Peabody in the movie. I think I might have mentioned that before. I want to BE Peabody. This was a fun 300-page mystery. I laughed out loud as I am wont to do when it comes to the dialogue in these stories and I was wrapped up in trying to figure out who the killer was and why. Even though it's not an official "In Death" book it didn't feel like anything was left out, except characters, but the ones that matter the most were there.I don't know if Nora Roberts writes all of these books or if there are ghost writers involved, but I don't think I have ever been horribly disappointed by an Eve Dallas story in the entire history of the series. And I really need to make sure I pick up the entire series second hand at some point and add to those I currently own. This is one of those series that would be great to read from start to end over a vacation I think. There are only 30 or so to wade through. ;)In Death Series
