Broken

Brokenby Alyxandra Harvey-FitzhenrySo, it looks like Amazon.ca finally has the correct AUTHOR listed for this book, but the product description is still wrong. Let me remind you of the correct one:

Ash Perrault can explain why she’s so upset: her dad’s fiancée is moving into their house, her best friend Mouse is hiding a secret from her, she has detention on the school dance committee, and her relationship with her boy friend, Seth, is confusing and often hurtful. But Ash can’t explain why the glass around her keeps breaking without her touching it. Her power to break glass is not only eerie, it’s dangerous. Can she find a way to control it?

I read this book while touching up the purple streaks in my hair. I thought that rather à propos actually. It's a short, quick and emotional read. By page 109 I was in tears. I'm surprised it took me that long to be honest because right from the first page I felt the hairs on the back of my neck rise.I don't deal well with real-life YA books. Emotion. I'm not good with it. (I am also not good with weather, existing and socializing.) Ash has to deal with the invasion of her home by her soon-t0-be step-mother and her two daughters. The 12-year old is particularly anxiety-inducing because she' s brat and Ash gets blamed for something she didn't do and now has to cater to the brat. Even Ash's father takes the brat's side. I hate that 12-year old with a passion and would have enjoyed it if she'd be pushed out in front of a moving truck during the story. But that didn't happen.Anyhow, I find it hard to categorize this story. I mean, Ash seems to have this weird ability to break glass around her when she's emotional (angry, upset, etc) and yet it's not really the focus of the story. The focus of the story is about her, trying to fit in and survive a family-change and deal with kids at school. Normal 16-year old stuff. And it just so happens this glass breaking thing happens once in a while. So it's not like this book is sci-fi or fantasy or supernatural. It's just... life - with a hitch. The part that killed me was when Ash's father totally forgot her birthday, but celebrated the brat's 13th birthday and his engagement party (which was ON Ash's birthday). I felt sick when I read that (again, me + emotion = AHHHH!). I wanted to smack everyone else in the story, except the eldest step-sister Julia, I liked her. She seemed nice, even though she had her own turmoil going on.Overall, I enjoyed the story (even with all the *shudder* emotion) and I liked the style of writing. The story was quite real, even the glass breaking parts, and in the 1.5 hours I read it I went through various emotions but they flowed together rather well.I received this book from LibraryThing's Early Reviewers program and I am so happy that I was lucky enough to have snagged a copy!
