Demonglass

Demonglass (Hex Hall, #2)by Rachel Hawkins

Sophie Mercer thought she was a witch. That was the whole reason she was sent to Hex Hall, a reform school for delinquent Prodigium (aka witches, shapeshifters, and fairies). But that was before she discovered the family secret, and that her hot crush, Archer Cross, is an agent for The Eye, a group bent on wiping Prodigium off the face of the earth.Turns out, Sophie’s a demon, one of only two in the world—the other being her father. What’s worse, she has powers that threaten the lives of everyone she loves. Which is precisely why Sophie decides she must go to London for the Removal, a dangerous procedure that will destroy her powers. But once Sophie arrives she makes a shocking discovery. Her new friends? They’re demons too. Meaning someone is raising them in secret with creepy plans to use their powers, and probably not for good. Meanwhile, The Eye is set on hunting Sophie down, and they’re using Archer to do it. But it’s not like she has feelings for him anymore. Does she? (goodreads.com)

There is something very annoying going on with Chapigo lately. They seem to  be very behind in getting copies of new releases if it's not a Big Name Author. Of course, even some Big Name Author books seem to be late to the shelves there. Heaven forbid they get any debut author titles in the store itself. I had a lot of frustration with them last year and it looks like it's happening again, only worse. Once I am able to I can almost confirm that I will be doing all my book purchases through the Book Depository explicitly. I am so tired of the Big Box Store that we're stuck with here in Montreal. We do not have many (if any) independent ENGLISH bookshops to turn to in our frustration. So online shopping from the UK is what I will be doing as soon as I am able to buy books again. My point in all of that is that I have been waiting for a sign that Chapigo would be getting Demonglass in stock. It didn't even look like the stores had it on order for a while. I noticed it was in stock on Wednesday as I was headed to an appointment and I begged my husband to let me mess up our finances so I could buy it. I knew it would make me feel better for a while. I was certain that my charming love of Hex Hall last year was going to carry over into the second book and I was right. In fact, this book was downright BETTER than the first! You know how you always have that worry over the sequel to a book not living up to the first? Well Demonglass actually surpasses Hex Hall and brings on the fun, the funny, the creepy, the scary, the steamy and the OMG WHAT DO YOU MEAN I AM AT THE END OF THE BOOK, NOOOOOO!!!!I sort of wish I didn't get this book as soon as I saw it in stock. I sort of wish I waited until the end of the year so I could be closer to the release of the third book so I didn't have to wait so agonizingly long for a conclusion to the way the book ended. The cliffhanger in Demonglass is actually very well done and left me panting in frustration once I turned the last page. I NEED to to know what happens! I can't even sneak into the author's house and steal her manuscript because I don't think it's quite written yet. Heck, on Goodreads the third book is listed as "Untitled". GAH!There is something about this series that just makes me smile all the way through the books. The humour style is right up my alley and Sophie is just so entertaining and able to make decisions that don't drive me up the wall. Rather than keep the adults out of the loop she makes the choice to ask for help. She might not reveal all of the information, but she does the best she can. I was certain this book was going to follow the pattern of "teen doesn't ask adults for help and just bumbles through everything". I was happy when it didn't. Ok, so things didn't all turn out peachy keen, but still.I am honestly salivating at the thought of getting my hands on the next book (a finished copy, of course, obtained in a very legal manner of buying it at the store and NOT breaking into the author's home). I not only want to find out what happens next but I want more simple, funny and charming reading right now. It cheers me up.This series just makes me all kinds of happy.Hex Hall series
