So... I had to go back and read my posts on Paranormalcy and Supernaturally because I was pretty certain my opinion of characters had changed completely. Sure enough, it did. Whereas I HATED Jack in Supernaturally, I truly enjoyed him in this here final book in the series. I even enjoyed Reth, whom I don't recall liking either. Strange.I love, love, love this series, I truly do, though if I had to find one negative thing to say about this final book it's that I was sort of put off by all the Faerie Realm stuff. I liked dealing with Evie and her bagging & tagging the paranormals and her endless struggle with IPCA. I liked that this was a paranormal series unlike the others out there, but then we ended up with a battle between light and dark faeries and well, I was slightly disappointed. This doesn't mean I like the series any less and I do love how the conclusion came together, I just expected... I don't know what I expected. Maybe something different? I just didn't see the story going in the direction that it did and it surprised me. On one hand - YAY SURPRISE DIRECTION! I don't like when I can totally call how a story is going to end, so I was happy about being surprised. On the other hand - ARGH! SURPRISE DIRECTION THAT I DIDN'T WANT TO GO! So, two sides to this coin as you can see. Also, there are no love triangles (much) and there's no insta-love (unless you're talking to a faerie) so whereas many YA paranormal books are drowning in sameness, this one still stands far, far outside of that crowd on its own. The writing is still witty and snappy and Whedonesque. Evie is just so likable. You just want everything to be pink and sparkly when you read this series. You share her enthusiasm for teen soap operas and wanting to live a normal, teen life. Evie can't help but make you feel happy about things and smile constantly when you read these books.Evie is awesome. And because I went back and read my previous posts for this series, I came across my original perception of the first book that made me giggle (yes, I crack myself up. I am my biggest fan.) For your reading pleasure:
I'll tell you a secret - I had absolutely no desire to ever pick up this book. I was skipping reviews, I was turned off by the cover which to me screamed "Scarlett Johansson does paranormal stuff while brooding in a pink dress".- September 11, 2010
I'm hilarious. And in case you're wondering, this series is SO MUCH MORE than ScarJo brooding in a pink dress. Please write more books (about other things), Kiersten White. I shall read you forever.Paranormalcy series
