Midnight's Daughter

Midnight's Daughterby Karen Chance

Dorina Basarab is a dhampir—half-human, half-vampire. Unlike most dhampirs, though, Dory has managed to maintain her sanity. Now Dory’s vampire father has come to her for help— again. Her Uncle Dracula (yes,  theDracula), cruelest among vampires, has escaped his prison. And her father wants Dory to work with gorgeous master vampire Louis-Cesare to put him back there.Although Dory prefers to work alone, Dracula is the only thing that truly scares her—and when she has to face him, she’ll take all the help she can get… (goodreads.com)

Here's the thing. I had no interest in trying out this series because my track record with "companion series" has been this: I do not like them. I stay far, far away from side series because generally those series and I? We do not get along. But I had to listen to fate. In the span of less than one week two people I know and trust when it comes to book taste told me how funny and great this series was. One friend couldn't  believe I hadn't read it yet. So since I happened to be in a bookstore shortly after these raving reviews I picked up the first book.I hated it.A lot.Eye surgery aside, it took me forever to get through this book. I hated the main character, actually that might be a little strong, I was rather apathetic towards her. I don't give a hoot about her or her history and I will admit freely that I skipped over almost all of the italicized parts of this book. I just didn't care. And I didn't like any of the characters that I actually liked in the original series! What the hell?I found the story boring, the characters uninteresting and all that back history stuff for Dory and Louis-Cesare was skipped because I didn't care.I am so disappointed by this book. I honestly thought I would find it funny and action packed. I thought Dory's tendency to shorten people's names was a lame plot device and shuddered almost every time I saw the word "'Du" written.I will not be buying the second book Death's Mistress at all. I doubt I would even borrow it if it was available at the library or someone walked up to me and said, "Here. It's free. Read it." No thank you.I am not saying that you, my readers, should not attempt this series. It honestly wasn't my cup of tea but I love the Cassandra Palmer series which is set in the same world and is the series that this one is spun off from. Cassie I find funny. The characters in that series I enjoy. The action I enjoy. It has a completely different feel than this Dory series in my opinion, though others do not seem to feel the same way I do. To each their own I say.Dorina Basarab series
