A young man with a mysterious heritage courageously challenged the darkness that strangled the land.He failed. For a thousand years since, the world has been a wasteland of ash and mist ruled by the immortal emperor known as the Lord Ruler. Every revolt has failed miserably.Yet somehow, hope survives. Hope that dares to dream of ending the empire and even the Lord Ruler himself. A new kind of uprising is being planned, one built around the ultimate caper, one that depends on the cunning of a brilliant criminal mastermind and the determination of an unlikely heroine, a street urchin who must learn to master Allomancy, the power of a Mistborn. Per goodreads, I started reading Mistborn in May 2010.Take a moment and look at the closest calendar to you right now. Go on. Look. I'll wait.*waits*You might notice that we're now in July 2012. This book took me over two years to complete. TWO YEARS. I have started and stopped so many times I really didn't know if I'd ever finish it. I bought this book myself because it looked interesting and yet, each time I tried to read it, I just wasn't in the mood for it. Do you ever get like that sometimes? You pick up a book but your brain just isn't wired the right way and you can't get into it, or you don't care one whit about what's going on? Although you know, you KNOW, that you want to read it and that you WILL LIKE IT, if only you could get past 5 pages without stopping. That's what happened to me with Mistborn. I will admit that I found it started slow and I had a little trouble grasping the world that was created. I'm still not entirely sure how Allomancy works and how you can burn a metal inside you, but I gave up trying to understand that once I became much more attached to Kelsier and Vin themselves.Since I have been in a Very Fantasy kind of Mood, I was determined to pick up this book and get to the end of it this month. I did. I am happy that I did because once I was able to devote a decent amount of time to the book I got into it easily enough. I cared for the characters and I was curious about the Lord Ruler and the Obligators and Inquisitors. More than curious. They freaked me the hell out, but I wanted to know what they were and why they worked that way.I loved the sort of stepping out of Fantasy genre and stepping into some sort of Victorian Historical type thing with Vin and her balls and the non-wooing of Elend. The mix of Courtly ways and the skulking in the mists at night, was very entertaining to me. I enjoyed the story more as I read on.I dearly loved Sazed, as well. I have no clue what a Terrisman is, or is supposed to be. I was not able to form a picture of what he was supposed to look like that didn't end up being a mashup of Lurch (Addams Family) and Alfred (Batman). I doubt that's even close to what he's supposed to be like, but that's all I could come up with. Heh.My main problem with the book though was that I felt it was so very, very long. My mass market edition IS 643 pages and I picked up around page 150 when I started up again this summer. I normally can read pretty fast, even when I'm not on my A-game, but this book just seemed to go on forever. It's that reason that I am not certain if I will continue with the series or not. Especially after the death of a character I was quite fond of occurred. I just don't know how the series will progress and I feel rather bitter that I was robbed of Character A and yet Character B who was supposed to be dead was suddenly not and we have to include B into our lives again.I will admit.. I was very angry over the death of Character A and I feel like for spite I shall not continue with the series. Hmmph.Although, I am cautiously curious as to what else will happen in the Final Empire. I worry that the other 3 books will be long, too. So I am torn. To continue or not continue? That is the question. The answer for now is: I have too many books in my house to justify buying more. Especially when I am not even sure I will enjoy them. So I will wait and think on this matter. I have an anxiety-inducing number of books to be read right now. I had gotten it to a decent number before BEA, but between that and my inability to not buy books when I see them, I am almost in the triple digits in that pile. I can't let that happen. I already feel like I can't breathe just writing about that. GAH!So, for now... I shall not continue with the series. I don't know if it will always be that way though. We'll see.Mistborn
