New York to Dallas

New York to Dallas (In Death, #33)by J.D. Robb

#1  New York Times bestselling author J.D. Robb presents an intense and terrifying new case for New York homicide cop Eve Dallas: one that will take her all the way to the city that named her-and plunge her into the nightmares of her childhood. (goodreads.com)

I never know when these books are going to show up in mass market editions anymore. I have to live with being pleasantly surprised when I walk into a bookstore and see one staring back at me from the shelf. That's what happened to me last weekend and this is the first book I have read in 4 weeks. It took me almost a week to read it because I had to remind myself I had a book to read since I'm still in the "I can't read anything!" phase.Anyhoo...I LOVED this book! The last few In Death books have left me slightly blah. I was annoyed by the repetitive dialogue between Eve and Roarke and the minimal secondary character appearances.  Of course, this book is pretty much all Eve and Eve alone (with some Roarke tossed in) because she's taken out of New York and placed in Dallas to try and catch the bad guy who has it in for her. However, this change of scenery made the book more interesting to me, I think. We were out of the regular routine of the NY books, even though Eve still was all "I'm taking this case. It's mine. He's mine. I'll call the shots." I was way more engaged by the action and the killing, pedophile Issac McQueen. We even find out more about Eve's past and all of her regular issues about being abused and killing her father resurface (as they are wont to do when she thinks about Dallas). I find that I can skip over that stuff pretty easily now, I know it already, I don't care to reread what I have already read countless times. I do that with the sex scenes between Eve and Roarke too. I just flip pages until I'm sure I'm back into the actual plot of the story. Normally it's about 3 pages each. Heh. Eve and Roarke do have a steaming love life, but to be honest, after 33 books, it's the same scene over and over again. Their love life bores me. haha I'm like an old married couple with these books now, we don't need the steamy sexytimes anymore. We can just talk and hold hands. :PI think my next date with Eve Dallas is sometime in August. I really wish I had all of the earlier books but as I borrowed them from a friend, I do not. I think I'd like to spend a month or so (two months?) rereading them all from the start to watch relationships blossom again. Also, there were some pretty badass murder cases back then, too. I find these cases getting less hard hitting and sort of secondary to all the bloody dialogue between Eve and Roarke. I need more Eve and Peabody on the scene. I also miss Mavis, but she's had a baby now and that's all her character does is talk about the baby. Boring!Nothing like a good murder mystery to get my brain interested in reading again. Sadly, now it only wants to read good murder mysteries with great dialogue.Oh! Shout out to Galahad the cat in this book. One of the things I like about the series is how little, subtle things make the characters more real and honest. In this case Roarke had Mira bring their cat from NY to Dallas as some sort of comfort thing for Eve. I love the way Nora Robers (as JD Robb) adds these little things into the book. I love her descriptions of the cat and how Eve reacts to him. It's just a subtle thing but makes for much more enjoyable reading. That is all. ;)In Death Series
