Nightwalker

Nightwalker : The First Dark Days Novelby Jocelynn DrakeThis book has been on my wishlist for ages. I first heard about Nightwalker through Vicki Pettersson's blog. By the time it had come out in stores I kept forgetting to look for it when I was in one (I am trying to spend less on my credit card, and therefore less online ordering!). I finally picked it up last month, and then was in such a reading slump that I never actually started to read it. I had the opportunity when I was off work last week (or, rather, the week before... hello? October? Why are you going so fast?) and was in  a waiting room for like, ever, and needed entertainment. By the end of that day I had finished the book and wanted more.Mira is a 600 year old vampire. She lives in the South of the US and suddenly her domain has been invaded by a man many call The Hunter. Danaus has been hunting and killing vampires in Mira's town and when they finally come face to face, Mira learns he's not there to kill her - yet. Danaus sought Mira for information on the Naturi (think, Fey) and Mira is the only one to have ever been captured and tortured by them and escape alive.I can't summarize this book without feeling like I am giving everything away. All I know is that at the start of the story I wasn't very impressed and I didn't know if I would really enjoy this book that I had been waiting for for a year. But it got better. Drake has a whole mythology of races and creatures that starts to unfold and draw you in, to the point that once I realized not everything was going to be resolved by the end of the book I almost whimpered. Drat! I wanted more!I liked Mira the vampire. I didn't like Danaus, though I don't feel he was developed very well. The few other vampires and Naturi we meet along the way weren't quite that memorable, but somehow they worked well together in certain situations. I liked the final showdown near the end, quite a bit, I could almost see it unfold before my eyes.I am looking forward to many more Dark Days books. I hope things stay dark for a while and don't get much lighter.Dark Days Series
