One Foot in the Grave
One Foot in the Graveby Jeaniene FrostOk, so this is the second book in the Night Huntress series and if you remember (or even if you don't) I did not care for the first book very much, though I was certain I would pick this one up when it came out. And I did. (Obviously, duh!) I was pleasantly surprised that I liked this book much better than the first. Normally it's the other way around with sequels, but after my reaction to Halfway to the Grave I suppose it couldn't get any worse. One Foot in the Grave takes place four years after Halfway ends. That surprised me in a good way. Cat (whom I still like a lot!) is now working in a special section of the FBI where she leads a team who specializes in tracking down and killing vampires. With her half-vampire self as their secret weapon, they have a pretty good track record of hunting kills. Only when Bones suddenly reappears in her life and she finds out there's a price on her head, things get a little more exciting. The story line was put together much better this time around. I didn't have to wade through 5-page sex scenes like in the first book (ok, so 5 pages might be an exaggeration) though there was one pretty intense scene in this book I really sort of skimmed over (what an imagination this author has! My goodness!), but all in all it was a book that stuck to the plot and kept my curiosity and interest until the end.One of the few flaws I saw in the book is something I am finding more and more common in female lead stories... every male creature wants the female lead. Cat can't take two steps it seems without one of the men in her life professing feelings for her. Quite frankly this gets very tiresome when you read a lot of the same genre of books and all the female characters seem to be descendants of Aphrodite or something.I will admit that the girl on the cover is quite the looker, but still, why does every man have to want to sleep with her? Why? Why is this so common in Urban Fantasy these days? I don't get it.Also? This book is sold in the ROMANCE section of pretty much all stores. ROMANCE! Since when did Urban Fantasy become the new Harlequin novels? Why can't it just be in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy section of the store, like Rachel Caine's Weather Wardens? I guess it's one of those things that just doesn't seem to have a home of it's own. Kelley Armstrong and Vicki Pettersson are both in the "Horror" section of my bookstores and they aren't quite horror (and those Horror sections are pretty much just Anne Rice, Dean Koontz and Stephen King with a few other things thrown in there).Erm, aside from my rants about what's wrong with Urban Fantasy these days (and believe me, there are many more where that came from!) I would suggest that you pick up One Foot in the Grave for a fun and entertaining read, even if you weren't totally sold on the first book. It was worth it.Night Huntress Series
