Out of My Pocket #11
Due to my book buying addiction I started this feature on my blog where I post about the book(s) I bought that week. Not something I plan on having every week – though it seems to be turning out that way. So here’s what I bought this week!
Previous OoMP posts can be found here!
I wasn't going to buy anything this week! I SWEAR! I have book buying plans for NEXT week (Demon Inside by Stacia Kane and Destined for an Early Grave by Jeaniene Frost)! But I thought I would check the store just in case they put these two books out early and lo! I came away with 4 books and a new reusable bag. Oops.
May Bird Warrior Princess: Book Threeby Jodi Lynn Anderson
At Hog Wallow Middle School, May Ellen Bird was always slightly invisible. Then she went on a long trip to the land of the dead, where ghost towns glowed blue in the dark dusk and spooky specters dwelled in cities on the Dead Sea.Back on Earth at last, May and her hairless cat, Somber Kitty, are now famous, their faces plastered across souvenirs and sportswear that read "May Bird Went to the Land of the Dead and All She Brought Me Was This Lousy T-Shirt." But, finally in the spotlight, May feels more than ever that she doesn't belong. Every night she sits by her bedroom window, gazing at the sky and dreaming of another place, wishing -- despite herself -- to be back among the ghosts. And then one night she gets her heart's desire in a way she would never have wished for. Only the Ever After isn't anything like the world May left behind three years ago. The spirits have vanished, and the towns -- once full of every manner of things that go bump in the night -- are deserted. Evil Bo Cleevil has made the Ever After as cold as his own frigid soul, and put up a bunch of tacky malls to boot. Now, with her friends missing and enemies all around her, May must find her way to the edge of the universe, where night swallows the stars, where allies are few and often have bad breath, where endings can also be beginnings, and where the truest hero lurks in the unlikeliest of souls. But Bo Cleevil's got one last trick up his sleeve -- one that no one on Earth is ready for. With the worlds of the living and the dead in the balance, will May's courage fail her one last time? Or will she finally become the warrior she was always meant to be?
The link will take you to my review since I have already read the book, reviewed it and previously owned the hard cover version. I have since given the hard cover away on Bookmooch.com and knew that I needed to buy the paper version to complete my series. I love this series by the way and I don't really want there to be more (because it was well ended) but I would like to maybe see a story about some of the spirits in the Ever After. I bought this one because it was only $6.99 and figured it was about time to get it already!
Promises in Deathby J.D. Robb
Amarylis Coltraine may have recently transferred to the New York City police force from Atlanta, but she's been a cop long enough to know how to defend herself against an assailant. When she's taken down just steps away from her apartment, killed with her own weapon, for Eve the victim isn't just "one of us."Dallas's friend Chief Medical Examiner Morris and Coltraine had started a serious relationship, and from all accounts the two were headed for a happy future together. But someone has put an end to all that. After breaking the news to Morris, Eve starts questioning everyone from Coltraine's squad, informants, and neighbors, while Eve's husband, Roarke, digs into computer data on Coltraine's life back in Atlanta. To their shock, they discover a connection between this case and their own painful, shadowy pasts. The truth will need to be uncovered one layer at a time, starting with the box that arrives at Cop Central addressed to Eve containing Coltraine's guns, badge, and a note from her killer: "You can have them back. Maybe someday soon, I'll be sending yours to somebody else."But Eve Dallas doesn't take too kindly to personal threats, and she is going to break this case, whatever it takes. And that's a promise.
I had no idea this was out! It's due July 28th apparently, but I thought a new mass market Robb wasn't due out for months, this is what started my book buying spree today. I blame Nora Roberts this time around. (All you Harrison's are off the hook this week!) Queste: Septimus Heap, Book 4by Angie Sage
There's trouble at the Castle, and it's all because Merrin Meredith has returned with Darke plans for Septimus. More trouble awaits Septimus and Jenna in the form of Tertius Fume, the ghost of the very first Chief Hermetic Scribe, who is determined to send Septimus on a deadly Queste. But Septimus and Jenna have other plans—they are headed for the mysterious House of Foryx, a place where all Time meets and the place where they fervently hope they will be able to find Nicko and Snorri, who were trapped back in time in physik. But how will Septimus escape the Queste?
This reminded me I also need to replace my hard cover copy of Book 3 (Physik) which I gave away on Bookmooch as well. But they didn't have it in stock or I would have bought that one, too. AND it would appear I never reviewed this series! Hmm. Will have to fix that as I happen to love it! Cathy's Book: If Found Call 650-266-8233by Sean Stewart
Things weren’t so peachy in Cathy’s life before Victor broke up with her. Her father died unexpectedly, she’s failing school, and her best friend is mad at her. But when Cathy decides to investigate Victor’s reasons for ending their relationship, things suddenly go from bad to very, very, very bad as her findings produce more questions than answers. For instance, what does the death of Victor’s co-worker, the strange mark that appeared on Cathy’s arm, and the surreal behavior of several Chinese elders have to do with it?Through Cathy’s unique and irresistible voice-and lots of proof in the form of letters, photographs, date book entries, telephone numbers readers can call, websites they can access, as well as secrets only a careful reader will be able to decipher-readers will enter a strange and fascinating world where things often aren’t how they appear.
So, I have always been curious about this one but never wanted to take the monetary plunge and pick it up in case I didn't like it. I still might not like it, but it was on the bargain table for only $5 - and the pocket on the inside with all the cool stuff was still sealed - so how could I pass this up?This is what I bought today (Thursday, actually) when I wasn't supposed to be buying anything at all. Oops.Tomorrow I'll show you what I got In My Mailbox!
