Silver Borne

Silver Borne (Mercedes Thompson #5)by Patricia Briggs

When mechanic and shapeshifter Mercy Thompson attempts to return a powerful Fae book she'd previously borrowed in an act of desperation, she finds the bookstore locked up and closed down.It seems the book contains secret knowledge-and the Fae will do just about anything to keep it out of the wrong hands. And if that doesn't take enough of Mercy's attention, her friend Samuel is struggling with his wolf side-leaving Mercy to cover for him, lest his own father declare Sam's life forfeit. All in all, Mercy has had better days. And if she isn't careful, she might not have many more to live... (goodreads.com)

I didn't realize this book was out in mass market yet! I saw it on the way to the cash register with my copy of Outside In. My trip to buy ONE book resulted in 3. Oh, well. We'll just get less on the grocery list this week. I read all 300 pages in one evening since the internet was out. I had just read and finished the last Percy Jackson novel and was wondering what I should read next when we realized we'd have no internet over night on Saturday. So I picked up this book and my husband picked up the Percy Jackson book and we curled up on the couch and read until we finished our books.I'm still trying to figure out what I thought about this book. Don't think this means it's negative, because it's not. The book read very quickly and whereas an entire plot unfolded and I followed the clues to the end, but when I was done I felt like nothing much really happened in the book. I think this is because it wasn't very action-oriented. Everything that  happened was rather low key. There was more character development than action and in this case I liked it.I happen to really like Sam in wolf mode. There's something about a dog or wolf character interacting with humans that I always find amusing. Possibly because I have my own dogs and I can totally see where the reactions and body talk are coming from. I also like interactions with cats as well in novels, and I don't have cats (VERY allergic). I guess I just like the animal companion when it can understand what humans are saying.Either way as non-actiony as this story was it was still a full and complete story with a mystery and everything. There were some new characters introduced and I am hoping that we'll see more of them in the future.I've got a year to wait for River Marked as I only buy these books in paper back format. I will now lend this one to my father, who is the one who got me hooked on the series in the first place. It was nice to have a comfort type read on the weekend. It made me realize I needed that, so of course I went and picked up the hard cover copy of the latest Janet Evanovich book that my mother lent me before Christmas. That one is now finished as well and I am hoping to write the review before the weekend. I make no promises, I have quite the week ahead of me and most importantly my eldest dog, Annie isn't doing well at all and I don't know if she'll be making her 13th birthday two weeks from today. I am hoping she does, but she's not eating and seems to be in a lot of pain. So we've got some tough decisions ahead of us in the next couple of days. If you're a dog person at all, please wish my Annie well.Mercy Thompson series
