Something Deadly This Way Comes
Something Deadly This Way Comes (Madison Avery, #3)by Kim Harrison
I'm Madison Avery, in charge of heaven's hit squad . . . and fighting it all the way. When Madison died the night of her prom, she knew her life would never be the same. Now she has a powerful amulet, a team of rogue angels by her side, and the ability to flash forward into the future to see the shape of destiny. And of course, now she's finally with Josh—a perfect boyfriend who doesn't even mind that she's dead. But being dead has its disadvantages, too. Madison feels caught between the light and the dark, and between her real life and her timekeeper status. When Madison has the opportunity to get her body back—to bealive again—she faces her most difficult decision yet. If she claims it, she could return to being a normal girl—and have a chance at a real relationship with Josh. But would having the one thing she wants most in the world also mean giving up everything she's worked so hard for? (goodreads.com)
Release date: May 24, 2011I want to like this series, I really do. We're now three books in and I'm still finding it a little "meh". There is something about the Madison Avery series that just seems lackluster to me. I love Kim Harrison and I love The Hollows series (her adult urban fantasy) but I am not getting the same satisfaction that I get from the adult series in this YA one.A lot of of my meh about this book was the story. I didn't care about the Tammy girl and her soul's fate. I think the way Madison blunders into every "saving" she does is just awkward and unhelpful. Most of the problems that happen are caused by her. Of COURSE she's going to get the cops called on her and blamed for things - she comes off as a crazy person! A crazy person surrounded by more crazies since Nikita, Barnabas and Josh are normally with her. Hell, I'd call the cops on her, no matter how awesome her hair apparently looks. (Still irked over the lack of hair sync with the cover model.)I was so excited to receive this book for review and I waited a month and a half before I picked it up so I could read it closer to the release date (which I thought was in June, so happy me, I got to read it this weekend since it's TUESDAY!). I just wish I could have been as excited as I turned each page.I love the concept behind the series. I do. The light and dark and timekeeper thing, awesome. I love the battle between Madison and Ron (the light timekeeper). I love how Nikita and Barnabas are evolving. I even love Madison's relationship with Josh. But the plots of the books aren't hooking me. They just aren't. I feel like they are written too fast with not too much thought. I worry that perhaps my literary goddess, Kim Harrison is now doing too much in a year and the stories are suffering. I'd much rather stellar Rachel Morgan books and forgo the YA novels. I am hoping that the next book will have a story line that interests me a little more.I didn't hate the book, I sort of feel apathetic towards it. It's one of those things where I feel like I should like it but I just didn't connect very strongly. It's Kim Harrison! I adore her writing! I just need meatier plots. ;)Thank you, Harper Collins Canada for this book. It will be a cherished Kim Harrison title on my shelves, even though it won't be a reread for a long time.Madison Avery series
