The Sisters Grimm Book 1: The Fairy-Tale Detectives

The Sisters Grimm : The Fairy-Tale Detectivesby Michael BuckleySisters Sabrina and Daphne have been shuffled from foster home to foster since the disappearance of their parents over a year ago. This time the evil orphanage lady is sending them to live with their supposed Grandmother in Ferry Port Landing. Sabrina doesn't believe that Granny Relda is who she says she is since her father told her they had no living relatives other than their parents.Granny Relda and her friend Mr. Canis live in a strange house and eat strange food. In fact Ferry Port Landing is a strange place and when Sabrina devises a plan for her and her sister to escape they get more than they bargained for. The girls find out that Granny Relda is indeed their grandmother and that their parents' disappearance may have had something to do with their family history. As the last descendants of the Brothers Grimm, Sabrina and Daphne learn that not only were those fairy-tales real, but they were actually an account of crimes and the Brothers Grimm recorded them for future information. Ferry Port Landing is a town where all the supposed fictional characters live and cannot leave. The only way they can leave the town is with the death of the Grimm line. Granny Relda is captured and it is up to these young girls to save her and their family as well as Ferry Port Landing! This is a series I discovered while randomly helping other customers look for books in a store I do not work in. The boy looking for the series was all excited about the release of a new book. I picked up this here first book and read the back and thought it sounded interesting enough (and cheap enough!) to add to my stack o' books already in my arms. I was not disappointed. The Sisters Grimm is a humourous and exciting tale of these two sisters who think they only have each other and discover that their storybooks have come to life. There is mystery and suspense and thrills and chills and not to mention sarcasm and wit! Young readers will enjoy the banter between the characters and trying to figure out the mysteries thrown at them. Who planted the magical beans which I have been locked up for years and let the Giant down to earth? Who is Granny Relda? Why does Mayor Charming want to buy up all the land in Ferry Port for his own? Some of these questions are answered and others, well, I guess I am just going to have to get the rest of the series for that one! There is a very obvious story arc that will continue throughout the series as the girls deal with the other Fairy-Tale mysteries that stalk them. After all, it's only with their demise that the inhabitants of Ferrry Port Landing can ever leave the town! These books are not in my library (but, hey, others are, so I'm happy enough) but they are good enough and cheap enough that I feel they are worth buying for my own collection. After all, I have a 2-year old neice whom I will be throwing books at as soon as her reading level gets a little better! I will be the cool Aunty Cat with the Awesome Library when she comes to visit (where ever I might be living at the time!)For those of you with young reader kids, I would suggest you look into this series. I would have said it would have been mostly girl-preferred, but it was a 9 or 10-year old boy who was animatedly telling me about the series, so I'm not going to make that statement. :)
