Treachery in Death

Treachery in Death (An Eve Dallas Novel)by J.D. Robb

In the latest in the New York Times bestselling series, Eve Dallas tracks down those who break the law-including the ones sworn to uphold it. (goodreads.com)

That's the only summary I can find online for this book. It's really too lame to even put it up here but I had to because it WAS so lame. It amuses me.This particular Eve Dallas mystery takes place completely within Cop Central, after Peabody overhears some corrupt cops talking about their dirty, dirty business. Peabody reports to Dallas and from then on it's all about spying on a Lieutenant and her division to catch them in the act!Of course this book wasn't as thriller-like as other ones about serial killers, but there are dead bodies and threats and some power-plays. At first I thought I didn't like the book as much since I was as gripped by the action, but having finished the story over a week ago, I am realizing that I did, in fact, enjoy this book very much. The last two in the series left me a little disappointed, and because of the change in direction of the case, I immediately thought "Oh, I'm bored". But I wasn't bored!Treachery in Death even had some prime Mavis action. It was so nice to have her not be all goo-goo over her baby for a little while. I miss the old Mavis, I miss the hyper, peppy, bubbly con artist that Eve first befriended. She's a little dull now with the lovey dovey husband and baby stuff. I get it. She had a baby and Eve is scared of babies. There is only so much you can milk that thread before I get tired of it.Speaking of getting tired of things, I am tired of all the Big Pointy Arrows when something bothers Eve. "This really gets to you doesn't it? When a cop is bad... or a father is bad... or a mother is bad... it gets under your skin, but you'll get through it because that is what you do. Even though this bothers you." Like, always. And so many people say similar things during the course of the book just with slightly different words. GET OVER IT ALREADY! We UNDERSTAND that this bothers her. Many of us have been reading these books for 31 books prior. We KNOW what makes Dallas herself. We don't need to have it said over and over again until we want t0 slam our heads against the wall.Has this series suddenly hit its plateau? I don't know. The last 3 books haven't gripped me like they normally do and rather than enjoy the character relationships as much as I do, I am more frustrated by their constant reiteration of known facts. We're not stupid readers. I guess that sort of thing is tossed in there for new readers who might be picking up a book in this series for the first time? Either way, there is way too much of it. Especially between Eve and Roarke.I am actually concerned that the story is moving towards trouble in Marriage Land between Eve and Roarke with the way the last two books have gone. Their relationship has grown stale for me and a little too repetitive from book to book but with the number of arguments they have been having lately I foresee trouble in paradise and I am not looking forward to that because it will change things too much for me.Of course I will continue to read the series because despite my annoyances, it's still a nice mindless read for me. I love a good serial killing mystery and as long as Nora Roberts sticks to that, I will be happy. ;)In Death Series
