What I Wore to Save the World

What I Wore to Save the Worldby Maryrose WoodHey look at me! I actually completed a book from start to finish without putting it aside and starting a new book. Trust me, the last few months that is how I have generally been reading books. Hence the lack of reviews and posting on this blog. But last night at 9PM I picked up this little book and by 11:20 I was done.Isn't the cover pretty? I love the cover. I just wish I could say the same for the story. I was pretty disappointed to discover that I didn't like this latest installment in the, er, is there a name for this? series. I loved Why I Let My Hair Grow Out and although How I Found the Perfect Dress wasn't as stellar as the first book, I did enjoy it. And at the start of this third book, I was sure I would enjoy this one as well. However it took a downward spiral somewhere in the middle and had me cringing at certain events. There was a bit of a clash between pop culture and the rest of the book. I'm ok with pop culture reference in stories if they are done properly. Too often I find the references forced, as if they were put in *just* to be there to make the book hip or cool. I could have done without the references to Facebook and Dancing With the Stars. I could have done without the time travel that leads to meeting ancient famous authors where a chance conversation is what leads to their completing their most favourite works (I hate those sorts of plots anyhow). Something about that middle-to-almost-end of the story just had my hairs on end in a sort of fingernails-on-chalkboard way.The humour was there, mostly. Many times it too seemed forced. Colin really bugged me this book, whereas I found him more or less sweet and charming in the other two. I do love Finnbar though, and was glad he had a decent part in this story. What I did love were the unicorns. I'll admit that when they first appeared I groaned and almost gave up on the story, but by golly they amused me. It was so cheesy and unbelievable that I shouldn't have liked them, but I did. A lot. And I don't even like unicorns!Sadly, I did not like the way the book ended at all. I don't know if there's an ending that I would have liked based on the plot, but I didn't like how it did end. I suppose there is an opening for another book? If there is one, will I read it? I haven't a clue. I will probably because they are short, fast reads and generally amusing. Although with the way things left off here I was just disappointed. But I will add this book to my collection, thus completing the trilogy and having it all pretty on my shelf. I am sorry that I didn't like it only because I was waiting so eagerly for the book to come out. I didn't hate it, I just didn't like it very much. However the series itself is fun and different and does have a good sense of humour. I would recommend it to anyone who likes faeries, quick reads and humour.
