Where She Went

Where She Went (If I Stay, #2)by Gayle Forman

It's been three years since the devastating accident ... three years since Mia walked out of Adam's life forever. Now living on opposite coasts, Mia is Julliard's rising star and Adam is LA tabloid fodder, thanks to his new rock star status and celebrity girlfriend. When Adam gets stuck in New York by himself, chance brings the couple together again, for one last night. As they explore the city that has become Mia's home, Adam and Mia revisit the past and open their hearts to the future - and each other.Told from Adam's point of view in the spare, lyrical prose that defined  If I StayWhere She Went explores the devastation of grief, the promise of new hope, and the flame of rekindled romance. Hmm, where should I start with this one? Perhaps I should say that once I finished (and enjoyed) If I Stay and I discovered there would be a sequel, I said I wouldn't read it. And yet, when offered the chance to review it from Penguin Group Canada I jumped at the chance. Why? I think it was due to sheer curiosity. The thing is, I didn't really want to know what happened to Mia after she wakes up. I was happy with the way If I Stay ended and I honestly feel it should have  been left at that. I get why this book was written but I think I should have stuck with my initial feeling of not picking it up.This isn't to say the book isn't well written and emotional. It certainly is! I didn't connect with Adam nearly as much as I connected with Mia, yet it was the last quarter of the book that brought tears to my eyes and really stuck with me. Up until then I was feeling "blah, blah, blah, it's tough to be a rock star that was dumped, blah blah". Other than Adam's confusion over what happened with Mia and his obvious love for her, I didn't care one bit about his life.Where She Went isn't nearly as powerful and emotional as its predecessor, but I think it does a good job of giving closure to If I Stay. I can't put my finger on it, but I am even more content with letting Mia go after having read the sequel. I am content with the way the story ended and I was surprised by that because I was so adamant on leaving things status quo at the end of If I Stay.I can't even say I was disappointed by this book because it was pretty much what I was expecting. I am torn between feeling happy that I read it and unhappy that I read it. I do love Gayle Forman's writing style so the words flowed smoothly over the pages making it an easy read, but I still can't shake the feeling that I should have just left off with the first book because that ending was so powerful. So torn! Gah!
