A Bad Kitty Christmas
A Bad Kitty Christmasby Nick Bruel
"Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the city, not a creature was stirring...Except for BAD KITTY." A greedy Bad Kitty didn't get all the presents she wanted for Christmas, but after she goes on a Christmas caper across town and through multiple alphabets, she makes a new friend, finds an old friend, and learns the true meaning of Christmas. Or not. (goodreads.com)
Hands up those of you who remember the time I used to read and blog about the books I read. Hands up. Anyone? Anyone?Yeah, me neither.Internet, I am struggling this month. Reading isn't the only casualty from the struggling, many other things are casualties as well. In fact, my Christmas spirit is pretty much null and void and I don't even have all of my decorations up. Mother Nature isn't helping my cause by making this my first ever green Christmas. We don't have any snow on the ground. There hasn't been any snow yet this year. Well, there was ONE day in November, but it was only ONE day. Life has been tumultuous enough that my generally festive, whimsical nature has been squashed like a bug. I can't read. I can't festive. I can't blog. It's just miserable.Although today was a good kick in the festive pants when I went to pick up a surprise, mystery box at UPS. Imagine my delight when I opened it and saw this:
Bad Kitty was the only Christmassy book in the bunch, but it was enough for me.
I'll be darned if this book didn't make me tear up a little and almost have to stop reading it aloud to my husband and dogs.
I kid you not.
Not only is A Bad Kitty Christmas funny, but it's also very moving at one point and dammit, I choked up and had to take a deep breath before I could continue.
There are THREE alphabets to go through in this picture book. All of them are laugh-out-loudish and Kitty's expressions are just precious. I love how unimpressed she looks. She reminds us of Unimpressed Annabelly when she was, well, unimpressed. Heh.
Nick Bruel never fails to make me laugh when he tells a Bad Kitty story and this one is no exception. I am almost tempted to not pass this one on to my sister & niece because I loved it so much. I will, though, as I do with all the Bad Kitty books, though I will make my sister promise to give it back to me if she ever does a cleaning out of old books or whatever because I don't want to lose this one!
If you're looking for a funny and sweet Christmas story for a child you know (or your own inner child) I would highly recommend that you go out and get yourself a copy of this book! (Yes, Tiny Orange Monkey, this means YOU!) (not to be confused with Sassymonkey, just so you know.)
Side note - I was happy to see that I dressed appropriately to receive this mystery package today. I know I like to coordinate, but this is the first time I have ever coordinated with something I didn't even know I was going to get!
Merry Christmas my friends! I hope to get more than one book (and a half, since this one shouldn't really count) read before the end of the year. Maybe Santa will bring me some whimsy and happiness for Christmas!
