Dead Cold
Dead Coldby Louise PennyIt's Christmas time in Three Pines and a year and a half since one their own was murdered in Still Life. There's been another murder and once again Inspector Armand Gamache finds himself trying to solve another mystery in this small, quaint town in Quebec's Eastern Townships about an hour outside of Montreal. All the likable and unlikeable characters from the first book are back and once again in the middle of a murder case. This time there is also another murder in Montreal of a street person who seems to tie into the mystery in Three Pines. What sort of tangled web does Gamache have to unravel this time? When my mother first lent me Still Life, I wasn't impressed. There was something about the book that rubbed me the wrong way. I can't really tell what it was, the writing style, the "name dropping" of Montreal-area type places, the characters? I still do not know, though I know I liked the PLOT. The mystery was gripping and kept me reading until the end so that I could solve the crime along with the Inspector. I never borrowed the other books from my Mum, to be honest, I didn't even think about it. Now there are 4 books in this series and I find myself owning the first three after having gone to a book launch earlier in the month and finding the author incredibly fascinating.I still find myself struggling through the books though. I read this one, but had to try hard to focus on it. Probably not my best choice of book while I am already having reading issues. But I was reminded of the inhabitants of Three Pines at the launch and wanted to go back there right away. I have started the third book, Cruellest Month, but it looks like it's going to be something that I'll have trouble getting into. I do have a couple of review books in my TBR pile, like Bite Me by Parker Blue and Rick Mercer Report: The Paperback Book. Perhaps I'll start one of those, plus I went out and bought Graceling a month ago and I still have yet to open it. I really hope this affliction goes away soon. I miss my books.
