Firespell

Firespell (Dark Elite #1)by Chloe Neill

As the new girl at the elite St. Sophia’s boarding school, Lily Parker thinks her classmates are the most monstrous things she’ll have to face…When Lily’s guardians decided to send her away to a fancy boarding school in Chicago, she was shocked. So was St. Sophia’s. Lily’s ultra-rich brat pack classmates think Lily should be the punchline to every joke, and on top of that, she’s hearing strange noises and seeing bizarre things in the shadows of the creepy building. The only thing keeping her sane is her roommate, Scout, but even Scout’s a little weird—she keeps disappearing late at night and won’t tell Lily where she’s been. But when a prank leaves Lily trapped in the catacombs beneath the school, Lily finds Scout running from a real monster.Scout’s a member of a splinter group of rebel teens with unique magical talents, who’ve sworn to protect the city against demons, vampires, and Reapers, magic users who’ve been corrupted by their power. And when Lily finds herself in the line of a firespell, Scout tells her the truth about her secret life, even though Lily has no powers of her own—at least none that she’s discovered yet… (goodreads.com)

Ok, so I have been lusting after this book since I first read about it on a blog, most likely The Story Siren's blog during one of her Books to Pine For posts. I have mentioned many times on this blog that I am a huge witch fan. I don't like vampires or werecreatures, I love witches (and faeries). So when I discovered this book I was so excited. Not to mention it's about a boarding school and I just have some weird fascination about boarding school books.Firespell wasn't quite what I thought it would be. It wasn't as "witchy" as I had hoped, but I really liked the way the paranormal aspects of the book were different than other books in the same genre. In all the book satisfied my need for magic and boarding school secrets. The book is short, around 250 pages, but those pages are filled with words in tiny font. There's a lot more to this book than just fluff. I read it in one evening and enjoyed what I read quite a bit. I liked Lily and her new BFF, Scout. There are some things I wish were a little more threshed out, but I guess as this is the first book in a new series that these things will be tackled in other books. I am not sure what direction this series will take, however because I don't really see much of a mystery in the storyline to carry many more books. I could be wrong, but I will certainly be getting book 2 when it comes out (I can't seem to find any information on the second book, though).Chloe Neill also has another series out called The Chicagoland Vampires and I would be reading that one as well IF my stupid store had the first one in stock. They only ever seem to have the second title in that series and I am pretty sure they both came out at the same time! Argh. I still have gift certificates left over from Christmas so I think I'll try to pick these up once I get back to work. If all else fails I will just order online. ;)Dark Elite series
