Knife

Knifeby R.J. AndersonAlso known as Spell Hunter (Faery Rebels #1) in North America, Knife is a fantastically fun read about a young faerie who just isn't satisfied by the status quo. She thinks there is more to life, more than just living in the Oak tree. More to learn, humans to investigate, adventure just waiting out there for her to explore. Some might recall this book being on my Currently Reading sidebar back in the summer, after all I did buy it from the UK earlier in the year. Unfortunately with everything going on in my life over the summer I wasn't able to really get into any books, this was one of the ones that got put aside after about only 20 pages. It was never because I didn't like it, in fact I did, I just wasn't "in the mood" and focusing on anything was difficult.Part of me is sad that I had to put it aside after reading it cover to cover just this afternoon (or, Wednesday, rather as I'll be scheduling this post) and discovering just how fantastic the book really is. At the same time, another part of me is glad that it took me this long to get back to the story as I have already pre-ordered the sequel, Rebel from The Book Depository and it'll be shipping in about a week. I don't have as long of a wait now between books. Woo!This is a different faerie story than I am used to. It reminded me much of Laini Taylor's Faeries of Dreamdark - in a good way, of course (I love that series, too!). At first I was certain it was just fantasy, faeries and only faeries. When the "humans" were introduced I had no idea they would be a part of the story. There are humans in Dreamdark as well, but no interaction. I liked the path the author took with the story, it was one that wasn't easy to guess at. I found myself just as excited about solving the mysteries as Knife was. I felt involved in the story. It made me think, and I don't normally like to think when I read. ;)I am now extra excited for Rebel to arrive. Honestly, the first thing that caught my eye about this book in the first place was the cover - I am a huge Brian Froud fan and just knew he had to be the artist for this book. I also liked the simplicity of the title. I was very disappointed to find out it would not be the same if I were to buy it here, in Canada. Hence the ordering from overseas. And of course the cover for Rebel is just as amazing, and I think these two books will make my YA bookshelf that much prettier!Interesting note about the author - she's a fellow Canadian and lives in one of the cities I have only ever visited once, but loved. I love to support Canadian authors! Gooooo, R.J.! *waves Canadian flag*Faery Rebels series
