Moon Called

Moon Calledby Patricia BriggsSo, my father lent me this book and said I might like it. Generally my Dad and I aren't quite in sync with our tastes, though I did get him interested in Vicki Pettersson's Sign of the Zodiac series and he's currently going through Rachel Caine's Weather Warden series. But normally things don't quite translate in the other direction. However, I have seen this Patricia Briggs series for a while now, and Amazon.ca keeps trying to recommend it to me, even when I check the "Not interested" box. Why was I doing that? No real reason really, mostly, I didn't like the cover art (I am so horrible when it comes to that) and I am tired of were-type books. For me, they have all been the same over and over and quite frankly, I don't really like them. I have the same feelings about vampire books. Give me a great sorceress book any day and I'll buy it up, but the rest of the supernatural world? I can take it or leave it.It's taken a while for me to read, especially with this reading slump I have been in. But I finally got into the book last weekend and once finished - I wanted more!Mercy Thompson was raised by werewolves, can sense all magic, fixes cars and can turn into a coyote. She's a Walker, which is derived from the term "skinwalker", a type of witch from South East Indian tribes who can use a skin to turn into a coyote or another animal. She's not a were, that's for sure. She's not as strong, though she can run faster, her change from human to animal is not the same as a werewolf. She lives in a trailer with her cat and loves to annoy the Pack Alpha who lives next-door to her. When a young boy shows up at her garage and is vague about who he is and where he is from, things start to get pretty crazy. The young boy is a lone wolf, though the only reason Mercy knows this is that she can smell the wolf in him, though he never tells her what he is. When he's attacked suddenly Mercy enlists the help of the local Alpha to help the young, new lone wolf try to survive and get to the bottom of his mystery. Only the Alpha is attacked and left for dead, his daughter is missing and the young new wolf is left dead on her doorstep. Something more is going on than Mercy though and she's going to get to the bottom of things and find the missing teen Jesse.I did get lost a few times while reading this book, though I chalk that up to my difficulty in reading anything and the long breaks between picking it up and putting it down in the first few weeks. Once I sat down and read the last half of the story in one day, I was able to understand things a little better. Hmm, except the entire vampire meeting chapter sort of lost me again, but hey, I still liked it.One thing that was not a feature issue was the were vs vamp plot line. Sure there were tensions, but it wasn't the main plot, nor was it done in a way to make me want to throw the book across the room. I am really, really sick of the werewolf vs vampire story line. It's always done so unoriginal.Mercy was likable, as were a few of the other characters. There was humour and wit in the story and the action was easy to get into. This is certainly a series I am going to want to own. Wonder how I can convince my dad to let me keep this first book...Mercy Thompson series
