Moon Rise

Moon Rise (Unbidden Magic, #2)by Marilee Brothers

Her mom's still dating losers. Her boyfriend's gone back to Mexico. Dad still hasn't told his wife and kids that she exists. At school, the drama queens and bullies still rule. But worst of all for Allie Emerson--aka the Star Seeker of an old Gypsy prophecy--is that her powers have taken a hike. She can't read minds anymore. She can't move stuff just by looking at it. The other Star Seekers are counting on her psychic gifts more than ever, and the evil Tri-marks are closing in, eager to snatch her magic moonstone necklace while she's helpless. The hot new guy at school is ready and willing to fight her battles, but he comes with some wicked baggage. Dear Diary: I'm a little worried. My new BF is a demon. (goodreads.com)

Even though I was falling asleep last  night I forced myself to stay awake and finish this book because I was enjoying it so much. The Unbidden Magic series is an original spin on paranormal YA and the book is written with a sense of humour. I love Allie as a character and I feel she's a rather strong female protagonist with a good head on her shoulders. One of the aspects I truly like about this series is that Allie and her mother talk about what's going on. Sure Allie holds back a little information now and then to keep her mother from freaking out, but my original fear in the first book was that it was gong to be a typical dysfunctional parent/child situation. Faith's character truly surprised me and the bond that this mother and daughter has is obvious and refreshing to read about. (This is not to say that Faith doesn't have her issues and make mistakes, but at least she supports her daughter and cares about her having lost her powers and all that stuff.)It's been a while since I read Moonstone but what I remember about it was the fun characters - Kizzy and Trilby. Sadly Trilby only makes a brief appearance in this particular instalment but she still made me giggle. Kizzy is around more often and is another strong female character in the story. My one problem with the book, and this was a problem of my imagination and NOTHING really about the story itself, was this: There are two new characters in this book, Beck and Nicole they are half-demon twins. I would have to go back and reread the descriptions because I don't think the description should have lead to my imagination fail, but for the life of me I kept picturing Nicole as Snookie from the Jersey Shore! GAH! I don't even watch that, all I know of her I see from TMZ. But darned if I could get another image of this character in my head. Once I thought of Nicole as Snookie it just didn't go away! And there's this scene in Church where Nicole is astral projecting and she's got this like, rainbow aura coming out of her head and I just burst into giggles with the image of Snookie sitting in Church with a rainbow popping out of her head which made me think of the Double Rainbow and I wanted to shout out - WHAT DOES IT MEAN?So, I can't get that image out of my head and I'm sure Nicole is probably a petite blond thing but I missed that somehow.Off to finish the last book in the series! Bless that BellBridge Books for sending me a bound ARC of all three books in one! SO HAPPY ABOUT THAT!Even if they make me think of Snookie.Unbidden Magic
