After reading Want to Go Private by Sarah Darer Littman, I was stuck in that void you can sometimes find when you can't get a book out of your head and nothing else you read after it seems to work. I had been reading Nicole Peeler's Eye of the Tempest until I misplaced it over the weekend, but when I found it and picked it up again right after Want to Go Private my stomach literally churned at the thought of reading any sort of sex scene or reference to sex and I had to put it down, hands shaking. Sure, Peeler's sexy times aren't dirty or wrong, but there was no way I could separate the two in my head so close together. I spent Sunday aimlessly picking up books, reading a handful of pages and then putting them down. Littman's novel freaked me out THAT much. After a night of horrible nightmares (I KNEW that book would give me nightmares!) I woke to find that my Book Depository order had arrived and I had hopes that the books within would help me out of the void created by WTGP. The Serpent's Coil in particular was high on my Most Anxiously Awaiting book list for the summer. Last June I read, and loved, the first novel in the Prophecy of Days series and though it hasn't gotten hyped on many blogs, it was one of my favourite debuts of 2010. I might be one of the only people who was eagerly awaiting the second book, but I don't care. It's out. I bought it and I read it!This series is all about the end of the world on 2012. Ok, so not the END of the world, but about what is supposed to happen in December 2012, in this case it's a shift in energy and some other scientific-sounding, mathy sort of thing. To be honest, I don't really understand all the explanations in the book, I only know I enjoy the story and I love the characters and the dialogue is witty and fun and there is a lot of action (and travel!).Science and math aside (I still don't think I am smart enough for these books), the adventures that Caity and her friends and family undertake are exciting and fun. There is danger and some pretty evil bad guys, but as long as you have a ninja-skilled monkey on your side, all's good! (I LOVE Mr. Papers!!!)Raedeke's take on the "end of the world" Mayan prophecy is something that I haven't heard of before. Rather than the doom and gloom WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE take, it's more about a change in the energy from the universe and on earth. Though I am still terrified by the thought of the end of anything, I much prefer The Prophecy of Days version of events. All those movies where everyone dies and there are tsunamis and streets breaking open and lava everywhere - GAH! I can't handle that. As long as it's kept abstract and more like vibrations in the atmosphere, I can go along believing we'll all be fine. We just have to find love. ;)I think it would be grand if what happens in this story happened in real life. Wiping out all the debts of third world countries, etc. That's pretty ideal. At one point I sat back and thought "Wait, am I being preached at?" but I quickly dismissed the idea because even if it was happening it wasn't hitting you over the head with it. I think mostly, it's an entertaining "What if" sort of fantasy world which becomes a mixture of paranormal (but without all the creatures) and science-fiction and science FACT.Generally this isn't really the type of story I would enjoy, but something about The Prophecy of Days sticks with me and if there will be a Book III I am very eager to read on and enjoy more of Caity's wit and smarts and adventures! The Prophecy of Days series
