Sweep Book 1
So, we wandered around Downtown Fredericton, NB one day while on vacation, and I fell in love with a used bookstore called The Owl's Nest (it was actually where we were heading when it started to rain and we popped into the comic book store). I fell completely and totally head-over-heels in love with this place. It had books everywhere. You could not breathe without tripping over a book. It was even a little TOO cluttered for my liking, but it was awesome. AWESOME. I headed allllll the way to the back (and it was far) to the kids' section. Yes. I didn't even check out the fiction or fantasy sections (so I have to go back!) It was heavenly. One thing I found was a series of books I have had on my wishlist since I saw them on a blog recently (I think it was a UK blog...?). They are apparently re-releasing this series (out now, I believe). But I picked up books 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9 of the original Sweep series. I have already read them all! I am seriously twitchy about not having books three and eight though - I am missing things!!I am doing individual posts for each of the books so I can link them all up at the end. Bear with me, folks!Sweep 1: Book of Shadowsby Cate Tiernan
Morgan thinks witchcraft is laughable when her best friend Bree drags her to a meeting of the Cirrus Coven. But during a ceremony led by Cal, Morgan's long-time crush, Morgan feels a shock. Suddenly everything looks brighter, clearer. Morgan doesn't want to get involved with witchcraft-but she feels like witchcraft is choosing her.
Hmm, my problem with this "out of print edition description" is that Cal isn't a "long-time crush". He just shows up and days later this is all happening. It's not like he's been around for ever!I have to say I was hooked on this series just by reading this first book and I no longer felt guilty about buying these 7 books. Heh.When I was 14 or so, I discovered LJ Smith's Secret Circle trilogy and I thought nothing could compare to those books. I was head over heels in love with them and I still have my copies and I still read them almost every summer. I wish I had known about this series back when it was first released in 2001 because it's similar and just as thrilling to read as LJ Smith's series is to me. I love anything about witches. This series was released in North America as Sweep, whereas elsewhere (UK, etc) it was released as Wicca, which makes much more sense. But I guess having a series called Wicca in North America wouldn't have gone over as well? Personally, had I been wandering the store I was working in back when this series came out and saw a series called Wicca I would have picked it up in a heartbeat! My guess is I saw these and thought they were romance. When I think Sweep, I think romance (sweeping off my feet) and not witchcraft!I really like the covers from the re-released editions, only I am going to try my hardest to find my missing books with the old covers so that I can keep my series in order. Yes, I am that fussy.Sweep Series books
