Sweep Book 5

Sweep 5: Awakeningby Cate Tiernan

Witchcraft is part of Morgan in a way she can't explain; it's a part of who she is. She thought her boyfriend Cal was, too, that they were destined to be together. But Cal betrayed her in the worst way imaginable, by trying to give her up to the dark side. Now, Morgan is learning all she can about magick so she can protect herself. She is studying with a witch named Hunter, who helped her fight Cal. Hunter and Morgan set off sparks when they are together, and Morgan realizes that what she had with Cal might not have been real. But there is still dark magick at work around them, and Hunter believes a friend of Morgan is to blame.

So at the end of book 4, Cal tried to burn Morgan alive to keep his mother from stealing her powers. Very healthy relationship there. Bree and Morgan's other best friend, Robbie end up saving her from the burning pool house only to find that Cal and his mother have escaped and there is no trace of them in Widow's Vale. The extremely British and gruff Hunter has taken over leading their circle and Morgan can't quite get a handle on her feelings for him. She tends to flit between hating him and desiring him. I have to say that gets a little old after a while. Also? For a "plain" girl, who just turned 17 and and had never had a boyfriend before Cal, she's certainly lusted after by many older, powerful guys. First Cal (who is 19?) and then Hunter (19? 20?). It just seems strange. I hate books where every male longs for for female protagonist. This borders on irritating, but Tiernan never spends too much time on it at each instance. But come on now. This book is full of dark magic(k) both by Cal, who is haunting Morgan and perhaps Selene has come back to try and strip Morgan's power for herself. But at the same time, someone Morgan has trusted and felt safe with turns to dark magick to solve a very big problem. Morgan is hurt by this betrayal and confused as to how someone so good could fall prey to darkness like he did.At the same time, Morgan is slowly being pulled into the darkness herself as she learns to use her powers and just how strong she really is. It's only too easy to use the power to get what you want. Not to mention it feels good to be powerful. Will Morgan turn out to be evil like her Woodbane clan ancestry?Sweep Series books
