Sweep Book 4

Sweep 4: Dark Magickby Cate Tiernan

Morgan inherited a talent for witchcraft from her parents, and now she is the holder of her mother's Wiccan tools: a green silk robe, an ivory-handled knife, silver bowls, a cauldron, and a long carved wand. The tools are awesome in their power, and Morgan's boyfriend Cal wants to see them, perhaps to seize power for himself. "We are muirn beatha dans, and we will always be together," he reminds Morgan, and she wonders if this is really true. Loyalty to Cal has led her to use her powers in ways that feel wrong. Is Cal the one she is destined to be with? Does she have a choice? Hunter, a member of the Wiccan High Council, says she does. But what is Hunter after? Who should Morgan believe?

So, all this stuff about Morgan finding her mother's tools and the introduction of Hunter? Yeah, I missed all that by not having book 3. Argh!If I was suspicious of Cal and Selene in the first two books, my alert was high on red in this one (probably in the 3rd too, but I'll never know!). When Selene learns that Morgan has found her birth mother's tools she's suddenly VERY interested in Morgan and even shows up at school early one morning to talk to her. Upon the advice of the owners of Practical Magick, a store that Morgan feels safe and comfortable in, Morgan binds her mother's tools to her to keep them safe. When Selene tries to convince Morgan to bring her the tools so she could "test" them to make sure they were ok to use, she can barely contain her frustration when Morgan tells her she already bound them to her. Selene comes up with a lame excuse to try and convince Morgan to unbind them because it might not be safe!Luckily Morgan follows her instinct on this and with just a little prickle of suspicion she hides the tools someplace safe that no one would ever thing to look for them. There are a few things that irk me about the series, I have never really been a fan of the spelling "magick" it has always bothered me. The explanation in the book is so that it differentiates from just plan ol' magic. But it still bothers me. I am rather shocked at the complete break down of friendship between Morgan and Bree. I know that friends fight over boys and it comes to light in future books that Cal purposely drove a wedge between the two, but if they were truly as close as they were supposed to be I don't see how Bree could have turned on Morgan as much as she did. It was slightly forced and an obviously plot point. Even by book 9 they are still trying to reconstruct their friendship but the trust is gone. I don't feel like their separation was natural or normal.Oh, well, the series is still really fun to read!Sweep Series books
