Really? That's the only synopsis online? Seems rather lacking, don't you think? I wonder how many questions I can ask in one paragraph? Do you think I should maybe get to the review at some point?Ok. I will. Here's the thing, this might look like a positive review because I was lucky enough to be asked to review it by the publisher. I am here to tell you outright that, no! I am about to gush about this book and it has nothing to do with the fact that it was for review - other than the fact that had I not been sent the book I would never have picked it up because I didn't have any interest in the series and never read the first book.I do not like to read sequels to books I have not ever read. I actually thought long and hard about whether or not I would even read this book since I hadn't read The Demon's Lexicon. But I picked it up because the cover appealed to me and the colours were all soothing and stuff. I quickly discovered that a) I loved the writing b) I wasn't completely confused so I was able to read the story just fine and c) I NEED to buy the first book. Sarah Rees Brennan has a very witty writing style and I LOVED the characters and their sharp wit. It was only very slightly over the top at times, but for the most part it was fantastic.I enjoyed the story very much as well, even though it would probably have meant more had the first book been read. The action was non-stop and I was caught up in the story right from the first pages. I especially loved the Goblin Market and the folks there. It had a rather cool gypsy-ish feel to it.A couple of things did confuse me, or at least I didn't pick up on right away. Firstly? I didn't realize this book was set in England. I only realized that when they decided to DRIVE to London. And since I was fairly certain that London, Ontario didn't have a Millennium Bridge last I checked, it sort of clicked that my brain was on the wrong continent. Also? Apparently Mae has pink hair? I guess this was described in The Demon's Lexicon but it wasn't really mentioned except in passing in this book (or at least that I recall, and what I recall was almost halfway through the book). I'm going to guess the girl on the cover of the book isn't supposed to be Mae then. All I kept thinking was how much I wanted to pick up that first book as I was reading this one, not because I felt like I'd started in the middle of a story (which, in fact I did!) but because I was loving the characters so much that I wanted to see how they were introduced in the first book and know what their relationships were before the sequel (especially Jamie because I thought he was awesome!).Things that bugged me: No one seemed to get into any trouble for ditching school. I wasn't really sure of the passage of time. Absentee parent who doesn't get it. (Although their mother did turn around in the end and prove to be an interesting character - briefly.) The brief amount of time the parent was an interesting character. The way things just sort of happened at the end with no real Big Reaction. I thought it sort of felt like nothing major was happening even though it was a set up for the third (and final) book. So, I think this book is worth of picking up. It converted me, a girl who had no interest in the series at all and who started on book 2 into a fan! I went from thinking I would read the book just to get it over with to not wanting to put it down at all - even to sleep! I will be buying the first book and the third when it comes out (soon? please?).Again, thanks to Simon & Schuster Canada for the opportunity to review this book!Demon's Lexicon trilogy
